Speeches
This section is dedicated to the recorded speeches of former Anishinaabe Chiefs and warriors. These speeches were primarily collected from the archival collections of the National Archives of Canada, but some were collected from the Metro Toronto Reference Library’s Baldwin Room collection. These speeches were written down in English by an assistant, clerk, or interpreter who was in attendance at various councils. The topics covered in the speeches focus on the treaty relationship between the Anishinaabeg and the British, as manifest in the delivery of presents to the Anishinaabeg. Chief Ocaita’s speech is the seminal speech on this website because of its fame, eloquence and its importance to present day Anishinaabeg in Canada. These speeches were recorded in English but fortunately, in some cases, the petitions written by the Chiefs contain some of the same topics or themes which allows comparison between English and Ojibwe terminology. More speeches will be added in the future. |
