To All Band Members of M'Chigeeng
Re: Conflict of Interest Issue - Are Band Employees Who AreCouncillors in a Conflict of Interest Situation
This issue has been discussed a number of times over the past several years. One referendum was held a number of years ago and the result was that staff members could run for Council. Another referendum was held this October 2002, but this time the members who voted believed there indeed was conflict of interest. Chief and Council are not satisfied that the turnout of the last 2 referendums has been sufficient to act on the results.
So the question is being posed again to the membership but this time all of the eligible members (on and off Reserve) are being asked for their input. The question that was on the ballot last time was as follows: Should Band Employees be able to sit on Band Council?
Yes o No o
The referendum will work 'in the following manner. All eligible members of the M'Chigeeng First Nation (those for whom we have addresses) are being sent a ballot which is to be returned by June 30th. You can use either an check mark (4) or a X Mark ( X ) to indicate YES or NO. You must write in your Band Number in the space provided otherwise your ballot will be considered spoiled. The Membership Clerk will verify band numbers on the ballot.
There are some pros and cons to the question being asked. As last time these are attached for information purposes only. The information is not intended to sway your vote one way or the other.
Thank you for your interest.
